How To Transition Your Skin From Summer To Fall

As the weather cools down and the days get shorter, it's time to start thinking about transitions - including your skincare routine. Like your wardrobe, your skin needs a little adjustment as the seasons change. Here are a few tips to help you transition your skin from summer to fall.

1. Start Using a Heavier Moisturizer

If you typically use a light lotion or gel in the summer, now is the time to switch to a creamier formula. This will help to prevent your skin from drying out as the air gets cooler and drier.

2. Use a Facial Oil

A few drops of oil added to your moisturizer can help to lock in hydration and keep your skin looking radiant. Choose an oil appropriate for your skin type - oilier skin types may prefer products with jojoba or argan oil, while drier skin types may do better with rosehip or avocado oil.

3. Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Just because the weather is cooling off doesn't mean you can skip the sunscreen. UVA rays cause premature aging and are just as potent in the fall and winter months. So be sure to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, even when it's cloudy.

4. Exfoliate Regularly

As we move into fall, dead skin cells can start to build up on the surface of our skin, leading to dullness and uneven texture. In the summer, you can get away with exfoliating once or twice a week; in the fall, aim for three times a week. You may also want to switch to a physical exfoliant as a scrub or brush, as this will be more effective at removing dead skin cells than a chemical exfoliant.

5. Drink Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated is important for healthy skin all year round, but it's especially crucial in the colder months when our skin is more prone to dryness. Drink eight glasses of water per day (more if you can!) and take steps to increase your humidity levels at home by using a humidifier or placing bowls of water around your living space.
